WRESTLING
LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior 165-pounder Nolan Barger (Clearfield) continued his climb into the upper echelon of Lycoming’s all-time lists and freshman 197-pounder Travis Ogden (Clearfield) came through with a key win as they went 3-0 in the Warriors’ sweep of three matches at the Washington & Lee Duals Monday.
The Warriors defeated Muskingum 45-19, No. 24-ranked Coast Guard 21-20 and Southern Virginia 50-6 for a 10-1 start, which is the program’s best since the 2001-02 season.
Barger, ranked seventh by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and d3wrestle.com, pinned Muskingum’s Tanner Walker at 5:55, decisioned Coast Guard’s Nick Remke 7-1 and rolled up an 18-2 technical fall over Southern Virginia’s Matthew Rohrdanz in 4:31.
In Lycoming’s 58-season wrestling history, Barger now stands second place in tech falls with 37 and is tied for third in wins with 121 and pins with 37.
Ogden registered similar victories, decking Muskingum’s Antonio Zapata in just 27 seconds, beating Coast Guard’s Phil Azzari 5-2 and tech falling Southern Virginia’s Caleb West 16-0 in a mere 2:14.
His win over Azzari, who is on the d3wrestl.com honorable mention list, set the stage for heavyweight Skylar Ebner to give the Warriors their first win over a ranked team this season with a first-period fall.
Ogden is 17-6 with a 9-2 record in dual meets.
Barger is 11-0 in duals and 20-1 overall. He and Seth Lansberry (20-0), the nation’s No. 1-ranked 149-pounder, are the fifth and sixth wrestlers to earn at least 20 wins in each of their four seasons as Warriors.
