During the presidential debates, Donald Trump blamed a flaw in the tax code that would have allowed him to use a $916 million net operating loss in 1995 to cancel out an equivalent amount of taxable income over an 18-year period. He vowed to simplify and reform the U.S. tax code if he became president.
