ST. MARYS — One day after being shut out by their up-the-road rival in Clearfield, the Curwensville Golden Tide had to load up the bus to make the long journey to St. Marys High School to take on the Flying Dutch. Â Earlier in the season, Curwensville suffered a 4-1 loss on their own field, so the Tide wanted to even up the series.
Unfortunately for the Tide, the home squad got their bats working early, and it was more than enough to secure the 9-4 victory for St. Marys.
Things got started in the second inning. Â A fielding error by Curwensville would start the scoring, and then a groundout by Hunter Fantechi would give the Flying Dutch the early 3-0 lead.
At the same time, Fantechi was helping his own cause with lights-out pitching. Â During his a six and one-third inning performance, he would give up four runs, all of those runs coming in his last inning of work.
Curwensville’s troubles continued between the fourth and sixth innings, allowing six runs over that time.
Curwensville starting pitcher Noah VonGunden got tagged with the loss. Â He was pulled after four innings of work, giving up five runs, three of them earned, while only picking up one strikeout. Â Austin Lansberry came into pitch beginning in the fifth inning, and yielded one run in his first inning of work.
The sixth inning ultimately was the final nail in the game for Curwensville though.
Tim Beimel and Jeffrey Wehler came home on a 2-RBI single by Tim’s brother, Michael. Â Hayden Tettis then brought home Michael with his own RBI-single to push the lead to 9-0, and providing a large cushion for the Flying Dutch to lock down the victory.
In the top of the seventh, Curwensville finally got on the board and hoped to swing things in their favor with a last-inning push.
Zach McClure started the scoring with an RBI-double to plate Avery Francisco. Â Lansberry then brought McClure home on an RBI-single. Â With two runners on, a walk to both Bryce Timko and then Jake Terry closed the gap to 9-3. Â A fielder’s choice closed the gap to 9-4, and with only one out on the board, Fantechi was taken off the mound while Michael Beimel had the task of getting the final pair of outs to close out the game.
A pick-off to first of Terry and then a strikeout by Austin Butlin would close the deal for St. Marys.
Curwensville (4-9) has three games slated for next week. Â Monday they travel to West Branch to make up the rain-out from earlier this season, then return home a day later to face Kane. Â The Tide then travel to DuBois Central Catholic on Thursday. Â Monday’s contest is set for a 4:30 p.m. start, while Tuesday and Thursday are at 4:15 p.m.
