CURWENSVILLE – Friday night was the last regular season home game for the Curwensville Golden Tide football team, facing the Brockway Rovers at Riverside Stadium.
Both teams entered the game with identical 5-2 records, with the winner getting the edge in advancing to perhaps a top four seed in the upcoming District 9 A playoffs.
And it was Brockway getting that edge with a 24-14 victory over the Tide, outscoring their hosts 10-0 in the second half.
The Rovers hit pay dirt first on a 21 yard run by senior Chad Perrin with 7:42 on the first quarter scoreboard clock.
It was the game’s first possession as Brockway took the opening kickoff and marched 67 yards.
Jarrett Esposito tacked on the extra point for a 7-0 Rover lead.
Curwensville took an 8-7 lead with 55 seconds remaining in the opening quarter on a Jake Terry 45 yard touchdown strike to junior receiver Zach Marshall.
Terry, a senior, ran in the two point conversion attempt.
The Golden Tide pushed its lead to 14-7 at 10:41 of the second quarter as Terry tossed another touchdown pass, this time a 28 yard hook-up with senior Quamone Newkirk. It was the 10th touchdown reception of the season for Newkirk and the 15th touchdown pass for Terry.
Curwensville failed on the extra point attempt but still stretched its lead to seven.
Brockway tied the game at 14-14 with 2:09 remaining before the intermission on a three yard run by Matt Latuska and Esposito’s extra point.
The Rovers would score the only points in the second half to pick up the victory and stretch its record to 6-2.
Esposito connected on a 20 yard field goal attempt at the 1:03 point of the third, and after a Tide turnover scored again on a 40 yard run by Latuska with ten seconds left before the fourth quarter. Esposito’s extra point made it 24-14 Brockway after three quarters.
The fourth quarter had no scoring.
Curwensville committed four turnovers on the evening – two fumbles and two interceptions.
The Tide, now 5-3 on the year, hit the road again next Friday, traveling to Ridgway to play the Elkers with kick-off scheduled for 7 pm.
Ridgway defeated Union 14-0 Friday night to up its 2015 record to 4-4.
