CLARION — Senior second baseman Derek Danver (Clearfield) slugged a grand slam home run in the sixth inning to propel Clarion past Pitt-Johnstown in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at Point Stadium in Johnstown Monday, March 30.
His second homer in three games gave the Golden Eagles a 9-8 lead before the teams matched runs in the seventh frame.
Danver had two hits and walked twice in the victory and also closed the week with a two-hit game against Seton Hill at Greensburg Saturday.
Clarion (5-16, 3-11 PSAC-West) was swept by the 13-1 Griffins 15-2 and 14-4 after splitting with both UPJ and Indiana University of Pennsylvania Thursday. The IUP twinbill was played at Showers Field in DuBois.
Danver had six hits but saw his average dip from .341 to .328, second among Golden Eagle regulars.
He’s also second in hits (20) and RBIs (12) as well as on-base average (.447). He has received eight walks and been hit by pitches six times.

WINCHESTER, Va. — Freshman shortstop Megan Vanderburgh (Clearfield) raised her batting average 34 points to .217 with four hits in Shenandoah’s two Old Dominion Athletic Conference doubleheaders last week.
Three of the singles came in the split against Randolph at Lynchburg Friday, two in a 7-6 loss and one in a 5-4 win that left both teams 5-9 and tied for eighth place in the ODAC.
The Hornets, now 7-17 overall, also split with Eastern Mennonite at Henkel-Harris Field Wednesday, winning 4-2 and losing 11-1 in five innings.
Vanderburgh is 15-for-69, a .217 average, with one double and one run batted in. She leads the Hornets in assists with 48.

JOHNSTOWN — Freshman right-hander Rachel Hoffman (Clearfield) was tagged with two of Pitt-Johnstown’s four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division losses last week.
She pitched four innings in a 9-1 loss to Seton Hill at Greensburg Tuesday and 1.2 innings in a 10-0 loss at California Wednesday.
UPJ (3-13) was swept in both twinbills, falling to 3-5 in the PSAC-West.
Hoffman has pitched 36.2 innings in eight outings with seven starts and five complete games. She has logged 17 strikeouts, walked 19 and hit two batters. Her earned run average is 6.87.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Clarion Sophomore Jessica Shomo (Clearfield) placed fifth in the long jump and 15th in the 100-meter dash at the Slippery Rock Open in Mihalik-Thompson Stadium Thursday.
The Golden Eagle thinclad leaped 5.14 meters (16 feet, 10¼ inches) in the field event and crossed the finish line in 13.25 seconds for the sprint down the William C. Lennox Track.
