Sara Jane Mattern Grants Awarded by Clearfield County Charitable Foundation

CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Charitable Foundation recently awarded grants from the Sara Jane Mattern Fund to three organizations in Osceola Mills.

This year the Osceola Mills Community Library, the Osceola Mills Community Historical Foundation and the Osceola Mills United Methodist Church will benefit from this fund.

This was the second year for grants from the Sara Jane Mattern Fund. Mattern, who died in 2011 was raised in Osceola Mills and very community minded. When she died, Mattern left a trust without an heir. The fund was set up to benefit these organizations and to honor her memory.

Because of the fund, these groups will be awarded money on a yearly basis for the unlimited future.

This year the Osceola Mills Community Library will use the money to help organize their resources. The library was formed in 2012 after the Clearfield County library system decided to close the Osceola Mills branch. Volunteers stepped in to run the library, and it is now financed only by donations and other fundraising efforts.

The Osceola Mills Community Historical Foundation will use their money to upgrade their heating system. Their building houses the library, museum and community meeting rooms.

The Osceola Mills United Methodist Church will use their grant to install a new sink, which is required to bring their kitchen up to code. The church provides free lunches to children during the summer months and free community suppers that are open to everyone in the winter.

The Columbia Fire Company in Osceola Mills is also eligible for funds, but they did not apply for a grant.
