Bison Stun Undefeated Huntingdon 37-36

HYDE — In one of the most exciting victories for the home team in recent Arthur J. Weiss Gymnasium memory, the Clearfield Bison edged the undefeated Huntingdon Bearcats 37-36.

And for the second dual meet in a row, the Bison picked up a fall in the bout’s final match to clinch the victory.

After winning four consecutive matches, the Bearcats had come back from 13 points down and held the lead at 36-31 when Travis Ogden stepped on to the mat for the Bison. One minute and ten seconds later Ogden had tossed his opponent onto his back and was the hero as Clearfield pulled out the unlikely one-point stunner.

The win evened the Bison record at 3-3, after opening the season at 0-3, while the AA state-ranked Bearcats dropped to 15-1 with the upset.

The match started fast and furious with seven consecutive falls, the Bison getting four of them and staking the home team to a 24-18 lead. Matt Ryan and Logan Gilbert each had first period pins, while Nate Lash and Josiah McClarren’s victims made it to the second period.

It was a total team effort by the Bison, where obviously, every bonus point was needed; but every bonus point not given up was also key to the outcome.

At 138 Noah Cline had two takedowns in the final period of a 10-2 win to pick up one much needed bonus point.

Luke McGonigal, the hero of the match against Penns Valley last week, did all he could at 145 to try and earn more bonus points for the Bison by scoring six of his10 points in the last period, but fell a point short in a 10-3 regular decision. The win staked the Bison to their biggest lead at 31-18.

152 pounder Steven Sawyer wrestled his second match of the night, the first being a major decision exhibition win. Sawyer was even at 1-1 in the third period, but just tired out after 12 minutes of wrestling and lost 3-1 in a valiant effort for the team.

Number two AA-state ranked Jacob Oliver at 160 proved why he was ranked so highly for Huntingdon, but could only manage a tech fall against Tallin Norris, who desperately fought off of his back to save a team point.

Another state-ranked wrestler at 170, Jon Wagner, put the Bearcats out in front for the first time since the opening bout of the night, 32-31.

Another Bison who desperately fought off of his back was Levi Wisor at 170. Bearcat Logan Fisher had Wisor on his back twice, and was close to doing so on several other occasions, but was unable to notch the pin and clinch the match for Huntingdon. He did pick up a bonus point in a 9-1 victory, but it wasn’t enough.

Ogden then sent the home crowd to their feet with the first period fall at 195.

Looking back on the match, by winning seven of the 14 bouts, and achieving some moral victories amongst the seven losses, maybe it wasn’t such an upset for the Bison after all.

The Bison will be back in action when they host the District 9 rival St. Marys Flying Dutch on Thursday. A win there would give the Bison a four match winning streak heading in to this Saturday’s 7th Annual Bison Duals.
