Houtzdale Senior Center Receives Grant from Department of Aging
HOUTZDALE – As part of Gov. Tom Corbett’s ongoing commitment to providing programs and services that help older Pennsylvanians lead healthy and dignified lives, the Central Pennsylvania Community Action’s Houtzdale Senior Center was awarded $28,900 as part of the Senior Community Center grant opportunity through the Pennsylvania Department of Aging.
Authorities Investigating Possible Meth Lab in Clearfield Borough
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough police, the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office and State Parole and the Clearfield County Drug Task Force have initiated an investigation into a possible meth lab in the area of 501 E. Market St, Clearfield.
Sandy Twp. Approves CDBG Project
DUBOIS – A second public hearing regarding the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) preceded the regular Sandy Township meeting on Monday night.
Eugene Zanella shared the supervisors’ intent to request funds to be used towards water systems interconnecting among Merris Avenue, Larkeytown, Slab Run and Fourth Street, as part of a multi-year funded project, which was first initiated in 2011.
Man Pleads Guilty to Stealing from PTA
DUBOIS – The former president and treasurer of the Juniata Elementary School PTA has pleaded guilty to theft for failing to deposit funds belonging to the school.
Michael P. Sprague, 43, 158 N. Pancoast Rd., Falls Creek, pleaded guilty to one count of theft by failure to make required deposition of funds received during Centralized Court at Magisterial District Judge Patrick N. Ford’s office. An additional charge of theft was withdrawn.
He will serve one year probation and he must pay fines, costs and restitution totaling $5,062.
DuBois Men Accused in Disturbance Appear for Court
DuBOIS – Two men charged in connection to a disturbance at the DuBois City Park were recently in Centralized Court.
William John Lamb, 45, 321 S. Jared St., DuBois, is charged with terroristic threats, simple assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct and his son, Kaleb Lamb, 19, of the same address, is charged with disorderly conduct.
Both were scheduled for preliminary hearings before Magisterial District Judge Patrick Ford.
County Tables Purchasing Communications Tower Location
CLEARFIELD – Yesterday, the Clearfield County Commissioners tabled action regarding the purchase of a communications tower location atop of West Market Street for the Clearfield 9-1-1 Center.
Upon input from their solicitor, the commissioners voted to table purchasing the communications tower location until investigating the matter further with the chief assessor.
During the meeting, the commissioners heard from Joe Bigar, director, and Jeremy Ruffner, deputy director, of Clearfield County Emergency Management Agency.
LT Supers Hold Second 2014 CDBG Public Hearing
CLEARFIELD – The Lawrence Township Supervisors held the second public hearing in the 2014 Community Development Block Grant application process Tuesday before its regular meeting.
The purpose of the public hearing is to review and select the projects for their funding application. The proposed activities are for street improvements for Kerr area. The 2014 allocation for the multi-year project is $111,086, which will fund $91,091 for street improvements and $19,995 for program administration.

DALLAS (AP) – A Dallas hospital spokesman said the first Ebola patient diagnosed in the United States has died.
Wendall Watson of Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital said Thomas Eric Duncan died Wednesday morning.
LT Supers Announce Fall Leaf Pick-up Schedule
CLEARFIELD – At Tuesday night’s meeting, the Lawrence Township Supervisors approved the fall leaf pick-up schedule.
Scheduled leaf vacuuming will begin Oct. 20 and last through Nov. 21. Zone 1, including Goldenrod, Weaverhurst, Hillsdale and Haney Development, will be on Tuesdays.
Commissioners Hear Presentation on the Liddle Gallery
CLEARFIELD – Jody Grumblatt, director of the Liddle Gallery, shared about the fine arts and crafts showcased at the gallery during Tuesday’s Clearfield County Commissioners’ meeting.
The gallery is owned by Grumblatt but is a co-op for area artists to display their artwork. It is located at 109 E. Market St. in downtown Clearfield.
According to her, many “wonderful artists” display paintings, photography and sculptures. She noted one gentleman brought in a powder horn with a map of Clearfield.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County Seeking Volunteers
DUBOIS – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jefferson County has an overwhelming need for volunteer mentors, according to Maria Foringer, case manager.
Further, there are currently 52 children who are ages 5-15 years on the wait list. These children are hoping someone will volunteer to be their mentor, she said.
Clearfield Man Accused of Operating Meth Lab
CLEARFIELD – Charges have been filed against a Clearfield man who allegedly manufactured methamphetamine inside his residence at the Leonard Grade Apartment Complex, according to court documents from Magisterial District Judge Richard Ireland’s office.
Mark Charles Hackett, 53, of Clearfield has been charged with possession of red phosphorous with intent to manufacture a controlled substance, risking catastrophe, criminal attempt/manufacture, delivery or possession with intent to manufacture or deliver, operating a methamphetamine lab and deposits, stores, disposes of chemical waste.
Alumni Fellow, Gas Industry Leader Shares Expertise on Campus
DUBOIS – David Spigelmyer, the recipient of the 2014 Alumni Fellow Award for Penn State DuBois, spoke on campus Thursday.
Spigelmyer is president of the Pittsburgh-based Marcellus Shale Coalition (MSC), the region’s largest shale gas development trade association.
Commissioners “Hold the Line” on Salaries for Elected Officials
CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield County Commissioners voted to “hold the line” on salaries for elected officials at a special meeting Thursday night.
Further, the commissioners voted, 3-0, to keep the salaries for elected officials at the 2015 levels from 2016-2019.
Clearfield Borough Holds CDBG Public Hearing
CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council held the second public hearing in the Community Development Block Grant application process Thursday before its committee meeting.
Council reviewed the proposed projects for the funding application, which is to provide improvements to the police and fire station. Funds being sought for the project total $99,427; $81,531 for the improvements and $17,896 for program administration.
Authorities Seize Items in K-2 Bust
CLEARFIELD – A search warrant was executed Thursday after an investigation into the suspected manufacture and sale of K-2 in the 200 block of East Pine Street, reported Clearfield Borough police.
AG: Clearfield Man Charged in Crack Cocaine, Heroin Bust
CLEARFIELD – Charges were filed today against a Clearfield man after a search warrant turned up crack cocaine and heroin inside his Turnpike Avenue apartment, according to the state Attorney General’s office.
