Campus Corner: Thorp’s 73 Wins Penn State Behrend Invitational; Mohney Heads in Second Goal

NORTH EAST, Pa. — Thiel freshman Jason Thorp (Curwensville) was declared champion of the Penn State Behrend Invitational via a scorecard tiebreaker after being one of three players who toured the Lake View Country Club in one-over-par 73 on Monday, Sept. 22.

His season-low score led the Tomcats to a second place finish, three strokes behind Grove City.

Freshman Brett Gardner (Curwensville) carded a season-low 83 that was the third best score for Pitt-Bradford, which wound up sixth among the 10 teams with a 329 total.

Gardner, who tied for 23rd place in the 50-player tourney, was medalist for the Panthers the following day in the La Roche Invitational by posting a 44-45-89 at the Wildwood Country Club in Allison Park.

The Panthers were last in the 11-team field with a 500.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

BLOOMSBURG — Graduate student Brooke Mohney (Bigler/Clearfield Area H.S.) scored her second goal in as many games for Bloomsburg at East Stroudsburg last Wednesday, but the Huskies fell 2-1 in overtime in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference nail-biter.

The forward/midfielder forced the extra period with a header on Chrissy Hollan’s free kick in the 84th minute.

Mohney, who made her eighth start Saturday in a 3-0 home field loss to No. 7-ranked West Chester, has recorded seven shots and five have been on goal.

Bloomsburg slipped to 3-4-1 in the PSAC and 4-4-1 overall.

CLARION — Freshman forward Carlie Freeburg (Clearfield) is one of the top reserves for Clarion and is averaging almost 25 minutes for her eight appearances, all against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents.

The Golden Eagles lost 2-0 to Millersville last Wednesday and wound up in a double-overtime scoreless deadlock at Shippensburg Saturday for a 2-5-1 record.

Freeburg has registered four shots, with one on goal.

ERIE — Freshman midfielder McKenna Aleksivich (Clearfield) played in both of Penn State Behrend’s double-overtime games last week, a 1-1 tie with Westminster on Tuesday and a 2-1 win over Penn State Altoona in the Lions’ Allegheny Mountain Athletic Collegiate Conference opener Saturday.

Aleksivich has one shot, on goal, in nine appearances for the 7-2-1 Lions.

FOOTBALL

EAST STROUDSBURG — Junior running back Beau Swales (Clearfield) accounted for 65 of Lock Haven’s 81 net yards rushing and also had three pass receptions for 29 yards in a 48-21 loss to East Stroudsburg at Eiler-Martin Stadium Saturday.

The 3,175 fans saw the hosts up their record to 3-1, 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference East Division, while handing the Bald Eagles their fourth setback, the last three to division foes.

Swales, who ripped off a season-long 26-yard run, leads Lock Haven in rushing with 193 yards on 61 carries. He’s pulled in 13 passes for 101 yards and one touchdown and returned seven kickoffs for a 22-yard average.

INDIANA — Graduate student wide receiver Trey Campman (Clearfield) made a solo tackle on a Mercyhurst kickoff return as Indiana University of Pennsylvania (3-1) rolled to a 41-7 victory in front of 2,759 fans at Miller Stadium Saturday.

Campman has appeared in every game for the Crimson Hawks, now 2-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division.

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Freshman linebacker Christian Lezzer (Clearfield) played in his third game for Boston College Saturday as Colorado State (3-1) disappointed the Alumni Stadium crowd of 33,362 by scoring a late touchdown to pull out a 24-21 win.

The Eagles lost for the second time in three games.

Lezzer has one solo tackle, which was a sack, and one assist.

CLARION — Junior longsnapper Eric White (Clearfield) saw action for Clarion in a 33-7 Homecoming loss to undefeated Gannon at Memorial Stadium Saturday.

A crowd of 5,500 was on hand for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division game as the visiting Golden Knights improved to 4-0 with their third PSAC-West win.

White has one solo tackle for the Golden Eagles (2-2, 1-2 PSAC-West).
