Surrey, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Four Surrey venues, led by Pennyhill Park Hotel, have been picked to host Rugby Union teams during next year’s World Cup.
One of the 41 bases that will host 20 teams competing in the event, Pennyhill Park Hotel has been chosen to house the England rugby union team.
“We’re thrilled to be part of this wonderful global sporting event once again,” Pennyhill Park general manager Julian Tomlin said. “It feels like only yesterday that we were congratulating England on winning the 2003 Rugby World Cup when the squad were staying here with us.”
“Since then, we’ve not only been the official England training base, but have also made great strides in the quality of the pitch and added new training facilities,” he added.
The tournament gets underway on September 18 2015, with fixtures divided between English and Welsh venues, ahead of the final on October 31.
The process to find the team bases began in May 2013, with more than 90 bids from across England and Wales.
A Rugby World Cup 2015 Team Base consists of an outdoor pitch, indoor training facility, a swimming pool, gym and hotel and will be used by the competing teams in the lead up to and during the six week event.
Other nations will also be using Surrey venues as their bases for the tournament.
The Irish and Italian Rugby World Cup squads will be using the University of Surrey’s Sports Park in Guildford.
“We are extremely proud and honored to have been selected by England Rugby 2015 as an official Team Base for Rugby World Cup 2015,” Surrey Sports Park CEO Paul Blanchard said.
Meanwhile, Sunbury’s London Irish Hazelwood ground and the Oatlands Partk Hotel will be home to Wales and Fiji.
