Bilbao, Spain (4E Sports) – Anthony Davis fired 21 points while Kenneth Faried had 15 markers and 11 caroms as the United States cruised to a 98-71 win over New Zealand in Group C of the FIBA World Cup Tuesday.
James Harden added 13 points while Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson contributed 12 apiece for the Americans, who remained unbeaten with a 3-0 mark.
Benny Anthony Jr. had 11 points to lead New Zealand, which fell to 0-3 in preliminary play.
The USA will finish their Group C campaign with games against the Dominican Republic on Wednesday and Ukraine on Thursday. The single-elimination knockout stage follows next week.
“We came off with some good intensity. Especially after the last game the way we struggled (against Turkey on Sunday) in the first half before picking up in the second half. Coach K emphasized how important it was to come off with intensity,” Harden said.
“It was a good solid performance,” USA coach Mike Krzyzewski said. “The intensity was excellent. We were against a different offense, which is difficult to defend with big guys. We defended that very well.”
Olexandr Mishula had 19 points off the bench as Ukraine beat Turkey, 64-58, to improve to 2-1. Omer Asik had 16 points and 20 rebounds in a losing effort for Turkey, which dropped to 1-2.
In the other Group C match, Dominican Republic (2-1) downed Finland (1-2), 64-58.
In Group D, Hector Hernandez scored 24 points as Mexico (1-2) clinched its first win via a 79-55 rout of Angola (1-2) while Australia improved to 2-1 after beating Lithuania (2-1), 81-75.
Goran Dragic scored 22 points as Slovenia (3-0) defeated South Korea (0-3), 89-72.
