Lincoln City, OR, United States (4E) – A 9-year-old girl was killed when a hole she was making on a beach in Lincoln City, Oregon collapsed on her on Friday.
Emergency crews from the North Lincoln Fire & Rescue District No. 1 and Lincoln City Police Department pulled an unconscious and not breathing Isabel Grace Franks from the collapsed sand hole behind the Seagull Motel and tried to revive her but failed. The girl was taken to the Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital but another effort to revive her failed, according to Jim Kusz, with the fire district.
Bystanders at the beach tried to rescue Franks when they heard her screaming but the sand kept collapsing on the hole as they dug. The girl was buried for about five minutes before rescuers arrived.
The beach hole was big enough for a full-grown adult to crouch down on the bottom. Franks, her siblings and friends on the beach dug up the hole. She sat down on the hole to see how deep it was when sand collapsed on her, Lincoln City police Sgt. Brian Eskridge said.
The girl’s parents, Robert and Stacy Franks, of Sandy, Oregon, were also at the scene when the accident happened.
