Bilbao, Spain (4E Sports) – The 2014 FIBA World Cup have tipped off and the top two teams in the world, United States and Spain, opened their championship bid dominantly.
The star-laden United States squad began its title defense becoming the first team to score over a hundred points in the tournament, defeating Finland in Group C 114-55.
Meanwhile, Pau Gasol scored 33 points to lead the Spaniards against the reigning FIBA Asia champions Iran in Group A, 90-60.
In other Group A results, Serbia won against Egypt, 85-64. Brazil scored an upset against European champs France in a close-one, 65-63.
In Group B, Croatia defeated surprise contender Philippines in an overtime thriller, 81-78.
Argentina also won their season opener 98-75 against Puerto Rico and Greece joined the win column in Group B after a victory against Senegal, 87-64.
In Group C, Turkey won a tight 76-73 contest against New Zealand and Ukraine escaped the Dominican Republic, 72-62.
Angola was the first team to garner a win in Group D after defeating Korea, 80-69.
Slovenia also opened their campaign with a 90-80 win against Australia, while Lithuania won over Mexico, 87-74.
