Earth City, MO, United States (4E Sports) – Michael Sam has been cut by the St. Louis Rams, quelling his efforts to become the first openly gay player in the NFL.

He came up short in a competition against undrafted rookie Ethan Westbrooks for one of the final roster spots on the team.

The roster has to be trimmed to 53 players by Saturday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.

Sam officially hit waivers by that time and the other 31 teams will have 24 hours to put in a claim for Sam.

A league source said that the Rams would like to bring Sam back to their 10-man practice squad.

The Rams closed their preseason Thursday with a 14-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins.

Sam led all Rams with six tackles as a defensive end.
