New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Qualifier Aleksandra Krunic pulled off a surprise at the US Open, ousting third seed Petra Kvitova, 6-4, 6-4, in the third round Saturday.
Krunic had never defeated anyone in the Top 10 or anyone in the Top 70 but changed all that by beating the world No. 4 Kvitova, who blew her strong chance of becoming No. 1 after this tournament.
Krunic gave everything throughout the match, from big serves and pinpoint passing shots to high balls, slices and drop shots to finish Kvitova and earn a spot in the fourth round.
Kvitova committed six double faults and 34 unforced errors, becoming the fifth top-10 seed eliminated in the first week.
Krunic will next meet Victoria Azarenka, a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Elena Vesnina.
In other matches, Flavia Pennetta beat wild card Nicole Gibbs, 6-4, 6-0, while Casey Dellacqua downed Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
On the men’s side, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic marched into the fourth round at the US Open for the eighth year in a row after dismissing Sam Querrey 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
Djokovic won 66 percent of his service points and converted seven of his 12 break points, to beat Querrey in 85 minutes. He will next face either top American John Isner or Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany.
Kei Nishikori also made it to the round of 16 for the first time since 2008 after beating Leonardo Mayer 6-4, 6-2.
Nishikori will next meet Milos Raonic, who defeated Victor Estrella Burgos, 7-6(5), 7-6(5), 7-6(3), in two hours and 43 minutes.
Eighth seed Andy Murray also made it to the next round with a 6-1, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over Andrey Kuznetsov. He will next take on either Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Pablo Carreno Busta.
