New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Mirjana Lucic-Baroni pulled off the day’s biggest upset at the US Open after taking out second seed Simona Halep, 7-6(6), 6-2, in the third round Friday.
A teen phenom in the 1990s, Lucic-Baroni’s win over Halep was the biggest of her career. In 1999, she had one Top 5 win to her name, beating then No. 4 Monica Seles en route to the semifinals of Wimbledon in 1999.
Halep came out strong, storming out to a 5-2 lead and even holding three set points in that game.
However, Lucic-Baroni recovered and took the first set via tiebreak. She kept her momentum going in the second set, firing back-to-back aces to close out the win.
In the fourth round, Lucic-Baroni will take on 13th seed Sara Errani, who defeated two-time US Open champion and 19th seed Venus Williams, 6-0, 0-6, 7-6(5).
Meanwhile, former No. 1 Jelena Jankovic eliminated Johanna Larsson, 6-1, 6-0, to advance against Belinda Bencic, who defeated sixth seed Angelique Kerber, 6-1, 7-5.
Peng Shuai also advanced to the next round after taking out 28th seed Roberta Vinci, 6-4, 6-3.
On the men’s side, seventh seed Grigor Dimitrov booked a spot in the US Open third round via a 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Dudi Sela in 89 minutes.
Dimitrov, who hit 28 winners and won 21 of his 29 net points, will next take on David Goffin, a 6-4, 6-2, 6-0 winner over 32nd seed Joao Sousa.
Fourth seed David Ferrer advanced without hitting a ball when wild card Bernard Tomic withdrew ahead of their match due to a hip injury. He will face the winner between Gilles Simon and Federico Delbonis.
Marin Cilic beat Illya Marchenko, 7-6(2), 6-2, 6-4, to book a third-round clash with Kevin Anderson, who defeated Jerzy Janowicz, 6-7(8), 6-2, 6-1, 6-3.
Gael Monfils, the No. 20 seed, recorded his 15th match win at Flushing Meadows with a 7-5, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Alejandro Gonzalez. Monfils will next take on either No. 12 seed Richard Gasquet or Paolo Lorenzi.
