St. Paul, MN, United States (4E Sports) – Minnesota Wild Coach Mike Yeo stated the starting goalkeeper job is wide open, with the team having Josh Harding, Niklas Backstrom and Darcy Kuemper for the season.
“I have to say we’re kind of open right now, to be honest with you,” Yeo stated through the Star Tribune.
The three candidates played great last season but were stopped by various injuries.
Harding was 18-7-3 with a .933 save percentage and 1.65 goals-against average, before going out last season after needing a treatment of multiple sclerosis.
Backstrom, who is a usual starter for Minnesota, suffered an abdominal injury and was required to undergo surgery putting an end to his year.
Kuemper then became the starter but sustained a concussion late in the season.
Yeo stated, “We’re going to have some scrimmages … but we’re going to have to pretty quickly determine who we want to give a greater workload to after that.”
He added that it will be a good challenge for him and the staff selecting their starter.
Yeo also knows they will be able to win and become contenders as long as health issues are put aside.
“We know that we have three quality goalies. If they’re healthy, they can compete and win hockey games for us.”
