Dolan Springs, AZ, United States (4E) – A weapon instructor was killed at an Arizona outdoor shooting range Monday after a nine-year-old girl he was training lost control of an Uzi and it accidentally fired hitting him in the head.
Veteran Charles Vacca, 39, of Lake Havasu City, died while being treated of a gunshot wound in the head at the University Medical Center (UMC) in Las Vegas, the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office said on Tuesday, according to KPHO.
The accidental shooting happened at the Bullets and Burgers shooting range on North Highway 93 in White Hills near the Nevada-Arizona border.
Vacca was standing next to the girl, who was handling a 9 mm automatic Uzi. The girl fired once and then lost control of the Uzi, firing four more shots. The Uzi recoiled sending it over the girl’s head and hitting Vacca in the head.
Vacca was airlifted to the UMC, where he died. The girl’s parents were present at the shooting range with the mother even taking a cell phone video of the training. The video ends before Vacca was shot.
Bullets and Burgers operator Sam Scarmardo said his gun instructors are trained to basically hover over people when they’re shooting.
