Peng Shuai ousts fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska at US Open

New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Peng Shuai recorded the biggest upset so far at the US Open, eliminating fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska, 6-3, 6-4, in the second round Wednesday.

The win was Peng’s fourth career victory over a Top 5 player, beating a No.3-ranked Anastasia Myskina in 2005, a No.5-ranked Francesca Schiavone in 2011 and a No.3-ranked Vera Zvonareva in 2011.

Radwanska, who was trying to reach the quarterfinals here for the first time, took a 2-0 lead and was one point away for a 3-0 edge.

However, Peng found her range and built a hefty 6-3, 4-2 lead which Radwanska failed to overcome, losing after one hour and 36 minutes of action.

Awaiting Peng in the third round is 28th seed Roberta Vinci, who rallied to beat Irina-Camelia Begu, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

In other matches, Simona Halep downed Jana Cepelova, 6-2, 6-1; Angelique Kerber beat Alla Kudryavtseva, 6-2, 6-4; while Jelena Jankovic topped Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-5, 6-4.

Other winners were Johanna Larsson, Alize Cornet, Roberta Vinci and Belinda Bencic.

On the men’s side, sixth seed Tomas Berdych cruised past 2004 finalist Lleyton Hewitt, 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 , in his opening-round match.

Meanwhile, 14th-seeded Croat Marin Cilic also advanced after Marcos Baghdatis retired while Kevin Anderson downed Pablo Cuevas, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) in just over four hours.

Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, seeded 19th in the event, was tied with Ivan Dodig 1-6, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 1-1 when the hobbled Croat quit in the fifth set in round one.

Other winners were Teymuraz Gabashvili and Jerzy Janowicz.
