Fort Lee, VA, United States (4E) – A Fort Lee soldier who barricaded herself inside an office at the base and shot herself in the head died from her wound at the VCU Medical Center on Monday afternoon.
The fatality was a sergeant first class who had been deployed to Iraq in 2007 and assigned to Fort Lee for three years. Her name is being withheld pending notification of her kins.
No other person was hurt during the incident at the Combined Arms Support Command (CASCOM) headquarters.
The soldier triggered an active shooter alert and a one-hour lockdown at the CASCOM building when she entered the facility carrying a small-caliber handgun and locked herself up in a third-floor office around 8:45 a.m. Fort Lee police came to the scene within two minutes and talked with the solider outside the door of the office.
The soldier was visibly upset and negotiators tried to convince her to surrender before she shot herself, according to Maj. Gen. Stephen R. Lyons, commander of Fort Lee and CASCOM.
It remains to be clear why she went inside Building 5020. Agents from the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command and FBI are investigating the incident.
