Miami, FL, United States (4E Sports) – Miami Hurricanes Coach Al Golden announced Sunday that freshman quarterback Brad Kaaya will be starting for the team in the team’s opener against Louisville.
Kaaya competed against a much experienced Jake Heaps who transferred from Kansas.
But experience did not seem to count for Golden who went with the freshman for starting duties.
“As I told him, he’s our quarterback. He’s not our true freshman quarterback. He’s the University of Miami quarterback,” Golden stated.
Kaaya was one of the major recruits for the Hurricanes and was a four-star prospect from Chaminade-Madonna College Prep in West Hills, California.
As a senior, Kaaya threw 3,855 yards and 27 touchdowns a school record, according to Fox Sports.
“As of right now we’re just taking it day-by-day. We’re focused on Week 1 and beating Louisville,” he shared to the media last week.
Kaaya, who enrolled last May is already studying the playbook, reports say.
Golden said, “A guy can be good in the film room or out of the book, and then it doesn’t translate. It has translated here.”
Kaaya will be the second true freshman to have the starting job for Miami since Jacory Harris in 2008.
