Florham Park, NJ, United States (4E Sports) – The New York Jets confirmed Friday that Geno Smith will be the team’s starting quarterback, after competing for the position against Michael Vick.
Jets Coach Rex Ryan announced the decision after Smith played his best game of the preseason in a 34-25 defeat against the New York Giants.
He said, “I think he’s taken off from where he left off [last season]. I expect great things in the future.
The 23-year-old was already expected to be the starter, even Vick and other players believed Smith would get the job, according to ESPN.
Smith said he was confident he’d be starting for the Jets in Week 1.
“The handwriting was pretty much on the wall. It’s a big deal, but nothing will change. It’s the same mindset for me,” he added.
Smith had been playing an impressive pre-season, reducing turnovers and throwing only one interception.
He also nailed 23 for 33 passes (70%) for 268 yards and a touchdown.
Ryan complimented Smith’s game against the Giants.
“I’m really, really, really pleased with how Geno played [in the preseason], especially tonight.”
Smith was 9-for-14 for 137 yards and a touchdown scored with teammate rookie tight end Jace Amaro.
The quarterback stated that he will always have the same mindset and will do what he needs to do.
