Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Los Angeles Angels pitcher Garrett Richards will undergo surgery on a torn left patellar tendon and will be out six to nine months.
The surgery is tentatively scheduled for next week.
Richards, 26, who will be placed on a 60-day DL, sustained the injury Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox and was taken off the field on a stretcher.
He flew back to Los Angeles Thursday to be examined by team doctors when the MRI revealed the extent of the damage.
The Angels are 19-7 when Garrett Richards starts this season, but just 56-43 when anyone else does. Their .731 win percentage with Richards on the mound is the best for any starter in the American League this season.
Richards took a 13-4 record and 2.53 ERA into Wednesday’s game and was tied with Felix Hernandez for the American League lead in batting average against.
