Harvey, IL, United States (4E) – A SWAT team stormed a home in Harvey, IL Wednesday morning and rescued four people held hostage by two suspected burglars since Tuesday afternoon.
No shots were fired and no one was hurt during the rescue and arrest of the hostage takers, according Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.
The hostages were two women and two children age 6 and 12. They were found on the second floor with the two hostage takers and immediately taken away by officers. The women were crying and the children were shaken when they came out of the house in the 14700 block of South Seeley Avenue.
The hostage takers were later forced to come out of the house with their arms raised and arrested.
The decision to move in for the rescue and arrest was made before 10 a.m. as the hostage takers refused to surrender and threatened the hostages with harm, Dart told reporters covering the standoff.
The two suspects forced their way into the house and took eight people hostage before 1 p.m. Tuesday after a gunfight with two local police officers responding to a report of burglary in the area. One police officer was shot in the arm and hospitalized while another suffered a graze wound.
More police and a SWAT team came to the scene evacuating nearby homes and locking down a school across the home. Hostage negotiators convinced the two suspects to free four children–two 1-year-old boys, a 2-year-old boy and an 11-year-old boy–late Tuesday.
