Miami, FL, United States (4E Sports) – Rookie right-hander Nick Martinez tossed six strong innings while Alex Rios knocked in two runs as the Texas Rangers defeated the Miami Marlins, 5-4, Thursday at Marlins Park.
Martinez improved to 3-9 after allowing two runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts as the Rangers (49-77) split their two-game series with the Marlins.
Starter Nathan Eovaldi (6-8) lasted just five innings, giving up five runs – four earned – on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts as the Marlins (63-63) missed the opportunity of going two games over .500 for the first time since June 17.
Texas gave Martinez an immediate lead with three runs in the first inning off Eovaldi. Alex Rios and Adrian Beltre got it started with a pair of two-out singles.
J.P. Arencibia smashed a double off the left-field wall. Rios scored, and Beltre came around when shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria mishandled the relay throw. Leonys Martin’s single to right brought home Arencibia.
The Rangers added two more in the second. Rougned Odor led off with a single and Elvis Andrus drew a two-out walk. Rios followed with a high popup down the right-field line.
Stanton raced over and tried to make a sliding catch, but he couldn’t get there. The ball was jarred loose from his glove and both runners ended up scoring.
Martinez gave up a pair of one-out singles to Eovaldi and Christian Yelich, putting runners at the corners. Martinez came back to get Donovan Solano on a fly to shallow left then struck out Stanton on three straight pitches.
The Marlins scored two in the fourth, as Garrett Jones reached on a one-out single and came around on a double by Marcell Ozuna. A grounder and a wild pitch brought home the second run.
Neftali Feliz came on in the ninth and surrendered solo homers to Ozuna and Jarrod Saltalamacchia, but he struck out Donovan Solano to end the game and record his fifth save.
