Hollywood, CA, United States (4E) – Spanish actors husband and wife Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz and may soon be unemployed in Hollywood as they face strong adverse reactions from top Hollywood executives.
This comes in the wake of the couple and other film professionals, along with director Pedro Almodovar, signing in July an open Spanish letter condemning the actions of Israel’s military operation in Gaza which they described as “genocide.”
The top Hollywood executives, angered by their actions reportedly called their careers to question as one top exec said that he was “furious at Javier and Penelope” and doubts whether he would want to work with the couple again.
Penelope Cruz’s clarified that she only wished to promote “peace in both Israel and Gaza.” This was met with a “collective eye roll” by the top executives.
Bardem on the other hand wrote, “My signature was solely meant as a plea for peace. Destruction and hatred only generate more hatred and destruction.”
“While I was critical of the Israeli military response,” Bardem wrote, “I have great respect for the people of Israel and deep compassion for their losses. I am now being labelled by some as anti-Semitic, as is my wife (Penélope Cruz) – which is the antithesis of who we are as human beings. We detest anti-Semitism as much as we detest the horrible and painful consequences of war.”
Actor Jon Voight, one of the numerous pro-Israel celebrities who support Israel’s operation in Gaza, was angered over what Bardem and Cruz did, and wrote an open letter: “I am asking all my peers who signed that poison letter against Israel to examine their motives. Can you take back the fire of anti-Semitism that is raging all over the world now?”
Although Bardem and Cruz are quite popular worldwide, what happens to their acting careers still remains to be seen. This is because the power brokers in Hollywood are generally pro-Israel.
