Hollywood, CA, United States (4E) – Elizabeth Varges, anchor of ABC’s television news magazine “20/20″ and “ABC News” checked into rehab on Saturday while on a vacation in California.
“While on vacation this weekend, I decided to return to a recovery center. As so many other recovering alcoholics know, overcoming the disease can be a long and incredibly difficult process,” Vargas said in a statement.
“I feel I have let myself, my co-workers and most importantly my family down and for that I am ashamed and sorry. I am committed to battling and addressing this debilitating disease and want to thank everyone who has offered their unwavering support during this trying time,” the statement continued.
The 51-year-old former anchor of “World News Tonight” has been struggling with alcohol addiction for years.
Last fall, Vargas also spent several weeks in rehab. Additionaly, she is in the midst of a divorce with her husband of 12 years, Marc Cohen, a songwriter who allegedly cheated on her while she was in rehab in November of 2013. Cohen and Vargas have two young sons.
In January, Vargas talked to co-host George Stephanopoulos about her “exhausting” battle with alcoholism during an appearance on “Good Morning America.”
“I am. I am an alcoholic,” Vargas told Stephanopoulos. “It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am.”
She further explained: “Even to admit it to myself was admitting, I thought, that I was a failure. You become so isolated with the secret and so lonely, because you can’t tell anyone what’s happening.”
ABC spokesperson Heather Riley said the anchorwoman has the network’s support.
“Nothing is more important than Elizabeth’s health and well-being and we stand squarely behind her,” ABC News rep Julie Townsend said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with Elizabeth and her family and we look forward to having her back at ABC News when she feels ready to return.”
