Richmond, VA, United States (4E Sports) – VCU has suspended point guard Briante Weber for the season opener against Tennessee and an exhibition game for a violation of team rules

“Briante has failed to live up to the standards we’ve set for our program and we are holding him accountable,” head coach Shaka Smart said in a statement released by the school Friday.

“Part of his discipline includes missed competition. We expect that Briante will act according to the standards of our program moving forward,” Smart added.

According to reports, Weber was charged with misdemeanor petty larceny for stealing an iPhone 5 at VCU’s Cary Street Gym July 24. A hearing is set for Sept. 25.

The 6-foot-2 senior guard has led the country in steal rate in all three of his seasons at VCU.
