Uncasville, CT, United States (4E Sports) – Emma Meesseman and Ivory Latta scored 16 each to lead the Washington Mystics in trouncing the Connecticut Sun, 71-67 Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
The Mystics took a 10-3 lead following a 3-pointer by Latta midway in the first.
The Sun used a 10-2 run to tie the game before Kalana Greene’s free throw brought the lead back to the Mystics at 16-15.
Bria Hartly had six points as the Mystics outscored the Sun 15-6 in th first eight minutes of the second for a 31-21 lead.
Alex Bentley then scored five as the Sun closed out the half with a 7-2 burst to cut their deficit to 34-30.
The Mystics (16-17) could only manage two 3-pointers from Latta in the first 7:06 of the third but the Sun players weren’t much better with seven points as they trailed 40-37.
Chiney Ogwumike scored four in a 10-0 run as the Sun went ahead 47-44 with 2:15 left in the third.
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt’s 3-point jumper restored the lead back to the Sun (12-21) before the fourth.
The Sun tied the game twice in the fourth and kept the Mystics from leading by more than five points.
Bentley hit a 3-pointer as the Sun closed in at 67-66 with 48 seconds remaining.
But Monique Currie hit four free throws to give the Mystics a 71-66 lead in the closing seconds.
Ogwumike’s free throw settled the final score.
Bentley scored 16 and Ogwumike added 13 points and eight boards to lead the Sun.
