Tommy Robredo stuns No. 1 Novak Djokovic

Cincinnati, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Veteran Tommy Robredo dashed Novak Djokovic’s hopes for a Career Golden Masters after beating the world No. 1, 7-6(6), 7-5, Thursday in the third round of the Western & Southern Open.

Last year, in his first attempt to complete his career sweep of all nine ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournaments, Djokovic had lost to American John Isner in the Cincinnati quarter-finals. He also finished runner-up here in 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2012.

Robredo, seeded 16th this week, defeated Djokovic in one hour and 44 minutes to improve to 2-6 lifetime against the world’s No. 1 player. In the quarterfinal, Robredo will take on the winner between sixth seed David Ferrer and Mikhail Youzhny.

Meanwhile, world No. 9 Andy Murray advanced to the quarterfinal after beating top American John Isner, 6-7(3), 6-4, 7-6(2).

Murray awaits the winner between five-time titlist Roger Federer and Gael Monfils, who face off in the night session Thursday.

Stanislas Wawrinka also made it to the next round after beating Marin Cilic, 3-6, 6-0, 6-1. Wawrinka goes on to face Julien Benneteau, who dismissed Jerzy Janowicz, 7-5, 6-1 in 74 minutes.

Also, 15th-seeded fiery Italian Fabio Fognini came back to beat Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

On the women’s side, top seed Serena Williams defeated 13th seed Flavia Pennetta, 6-2, 6-2, to reach the quarterfinals. The world No. 1 will play the winner between eighth seed Jelena Jankovic and Sloane Stephens.

Meanwhile, world No. 2 Simona Halep downed Lucie Safarova, 6-4, 7-5, to advance against either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Maria Sharapova.
