New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – The NBA denies offering to drop a fine against the Toronto Raptors if the team removed Drake’s title as Global Ambassador.
The Raptors were fined $25,000 this week because Drake, a popular rapper, told Kevin Durant during a concert “see what would happen if he came to play in Toronto.”
Since Durant is under contract with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Drake is associated with the Raptors, this was considered tampering.
“As the Raptors’ global ambassador, Drake must follow our anti-tampering rules,” said Tim Frank, NBA’s senior vice-president of basketball communications.
“At no point did we suggest his title be removed but we were clear that as long as he acted as a representative of the team, he is subject to the league’s rules.”
Drake was brought on as part of the team’s efforts to rebrand the team but is not getting paid for his role.
