Cardiff, Wales, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Cristiano Ronaldo scored in each half to help Real Madrid claim the UEFA Super Cup via a 2-0 triumph over Sevilla Tuesday at Cardiff City Stadium.
“Cristiano’s performance was fantastic. He was the match winner, the best player on the pitch and won the match with two fantastic goals. He played really well,” Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said.
Real Madrid, the reigning Champions League titlist, was in control throughout against the Europa League champions, but had to wait until the half-hour mark to open the scoring.
Gareth Bale, playing in his hometown, found Ronaldo with a wonderful cross from the left, teeing up the Portuguese for a relatively simple sliding finish in the 30th minute.
Ronaldo made sure of Real’s second Super Cup triumph four minutes after the interval with a powerful left-footed strike.
Ronaldo’s performance saw him take his tally of goals against Sevilla to 18 since his arrival in Madrid in 2009.
James Rodriguez, Real Madrid’s newest addition, almost made it a three-goal lead but Beto denied him with a one-handed stop.
Sevilla had a chance to score late in the game but Iker Casillas was there to deny Iago Aspas.
“We defended well, but in attack we lacked something extra – precision and aggression in front of their goal. Above all the difference was Madrid’s counterattacks,” said Sevilla coach Unai Emery.
