Vancouver, BC, Canada (4E Sports) – Pedro Morales ignited an own goal by Igor Juliao and then assisted Darren Mattocks for another goal to lead the Vancouver Whitecaps over Sporting Kansas City, 2-0 Sunday at BC Place.

The Whitecaps had their first scoring opportunity in the fourth minute but Darren Mattocks’ left footed shot from the center of the box was blocked.

Sporting also had a missed chance when Benny Feilhaber’s right footed curling effort from 22 yards after an assist by Graham Zusi missed to the right.

In the 17th minute, Morales blasted a kick from beyond midfield towards Sporting’s Juliao who had his defensive header float over goalkeeper Andy Gruenebaum and into their own goal.

The Whitecaps doubled their lead in the 39th minute after Morales stole possession from Matt Besler before setting up a two-on-one with Mattocks.

The streaking Morales centered the ball towards Mattocks who blasted it right into the net.

Sebastian Fernandez almost gave the Whitecaps its third goal just before half time after an assist from Morales but Aurelien Collin made a last ditch effort to clear the ball off the line.

The win brought the Whitecaps (7-4-11; 32 points) back into the playoff spot in the West, jumping over Colorado and Portland into 5th place.

Sporting Kansas City (11-6-6; 39 points) remained at the top of the Eastern Conference standings.
