Cleveland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Cleveland Browns Coach Mike Pettine stated in a press conference Sunday that Brian Hoyer is leading the team’s quarterback starter race, but Johnny Manziel is right in it.
“We put Brian out there with the ones, and that was for a reason,” Pettine stated after a preseason opener loss to Detroit.
Pettine added that Hoyer’s veteran experience and knowledge with the playbook keeps him ahead.
Although Manziel is making serious improvement and is handling the playbook very well, he added.
Pettine wanted to have a final verdict on a starting QB before the team’s third pre-season game.
The Browns have not decided yet who will start in their second pre-season appearance in Washington.
“I would like it decided before then. I’m not going to say that that’s 1,000 percent etched in stone. But I would like it before then.”
According to ESPN, whoever makes the strongest impression against the Redskins will likely start this season.
Good reviews were given to the QBs after playing very solid and efficient, with Hoyer having 24 plays and Manziel with 25.
Besides wanting to have a starting QB before the third preseason game, Pettine reiterated one more point.
He said a rookie starter is not ideal though winning is achievable with one.
“I’ve always felt that it’s the ideal situation that the rookie gets the chance to sit behind someone and learn.”
