San Antonio, TX, United States (4E Sports) – Kayla McBride scored 21 and Jayne Appel grabbed 20 rebounds to lead the San Antonio Stars in beating the Los Angeles Sparks, 82-76 on Sunday at AT&T Center.
Sophia Young-Malcolm and Danielle Robinson had 14 points apiece and Jia Perkins added 12 in the win.
The game was close early on with neither team leading by more than three points until Danielle Robinson’s layup gave the Stars a 27-22 lead with 4:56 remaining in the second.
Then Kayla McBride’s layup gave the Stars a 33-26 lead with 1:33 left before the half.
It was also McBride who gave the Stars a 46-37 and a 54-43 lead with 3-pointers later in the third.
Nneka Ogwumike scored eight of Los Angeles’ final 13 points of the third to cut the lead to 61-56.
A Lindsey Harding jumper finally put the Sparks ahead, 66-65 with 4:48 left.
There were four subsequent lead changes before Jia Perkins’ gave the Stars a 75-74 lead with just a minute left.
The Stars would hold on to the lead for good as Robinson stole a pass on the ensuing trip and Becky Hammon drained a 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining for a 78-74 lead.
Ogwumike scored 18, Jantel Lavender added 15 and Alana Beard had 13 for the Sparks.
