London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Arsenal bagged its 13th FA Community Shield trophy via a 3-0 victory over Manchester City Sunday at Wembley.
Santi Cazorla, Aaron Ramsey and substitute Olivier Giroud scored to help Arsenal clinch the win, which came one week before the start of the Premier League.
Cazorla opened scoring for the FA Cup holders with a low shot in the 21st minute and Aaron Ramsey added a second three minutes before the break, finishing expertly after good work from Yaya Sanogo.
In the 60th minute Giroud produced a thunderous effort from 25 yards to seal the victory.
“It was a very good game,” said Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger. “I think we started very well, we had a great first half with a lot of variation in our attacking and a lot of togetherness in our defending.”
“We could not sustain it completely for 90 minutes, but in the second half when we lost a bit of legs we kept the togetherness and the desire to fight,” he added.
Wenger said the victory would give his side a “positive platform” heading into their opening Premier League match against Crystal Palace at home Saturday.
“To win today gives us a positive platform to prepare but now the Premier League starts and we have to start well at home because it’s a derby, it’s a very uncomfortable team in Crystal Palace,” he said.
City manager Manuel Pellegrini lamented his team’s first-half performance but was encouraged by the improvement after the break and highlighted that many of the players were missing because of a late return from the FIFA World Cup.
“In the first half we didn’t play with the pace we showed in pre-season and Arsenal scored two goals because we didn’t defend very well,” Pellegrini said. “In the second half we played well, we had possession of the ball and had chances to score.”
