Novak Djokovic edges Gael Monfils in Canada

Toronto, ON, Canada (4E Sports) – Top seed Novak Djokovic survived a tough challenge from Gael Monfils en route to a 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(2) win Wednesday in the second round of the Rogers Cup.

Djokovic’s bid for a fourth title in the event was pushed to the brink before prevailing in two hours and 41 minutes.

Monfils found himself two points from completing the upset at 6-5 30/30, but Djokovic reeled off nine of the next 11 points for the pulsating victory.

Djokovic, who fired 36 winners and saved six of seven break points, is seeking to join Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer as the only players to win 20 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 titles.

With the win, Djokovic advanced against No. 13 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Jeremy Chardy, 7-6(6), 6-4 in one hour and 37 minutes.

Andy Murray joined Djokovic in the next round after dismissing Nick Kyrgios, 6-2, 6-2. Murray lost just six service points and converted four of his five break point chances to advance in just 54 minutes.

The eighth-seeded Murray goes on to face Richard Gasquet, who rallied for a 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3 win over Ivo Karlovic.

Other winners were David Ferrer, Julien Benneteau, Marin Cilic, Kevin Anderson, Tommy Robredo and Ivan Dodig.

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova defeated Garbine Muguruza 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the third round against Carla Suarez Navarro, a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 winner over lucky loser Karolina Pliskova.

Meanwhile, sixth seed Angelique Kerber downed Caroline Garcia, 6-4, 6-1, while former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki beat Klara Koukalova, 6-1, 6-2.

Other winners were Heather Watson and Ekaterina Makarova.
