New York, NY, United States (4E) – Dame Helen Mirren is all set for her Broadway comeback in a role she knows too well—as Queen Elizabeth II in Peter Morgan’s play “The Audience,” it was announced Wednesday.
The play, to be directed by Stephen Daldry, will preview on February 17 at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, and will formally open on March 8. Other cast members will be announced at a later date.
“The Audience” has premiered in London last year, with Mirren playing the same role, for which she won an Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Play. She has previously played Her Royal Highness in the 2006 film “The Queen,” also written by Morgan, and received an Oscar award for her performance.
The play is an imagining of the Queen’s series of “pivotal” meetings with her twelve Prime Ministers, who “[use] these private conversations as a sounding board and a confessional — sometimes intimate, sometimes explosive.” The description continues, “In turn, the Queen can’t help but reveal her own self as she advises, consoles and, on occasion, teases.”
Produced by Matthew Byam Shaw for Playful Productions, Robert Fox and Andy Harries, “The Audience,” will run for a limited engagement from until June 28, 2015.
