Kentwood, MI, United States (4E) – A 12-year-old boy pleaded not guilty to charges of murder on Tuesday afternoon after he stabbed a 9-year-old boy at a playground of a Michigan mobile home park the night before.
The boy made the plea before the Kent County Family Court after Kentwood police charged him as an adult for the killing of Michael Conner Verkerke in Pinebrook Village. Verkerke died at a hospital after the stabbing.
The suspect and the victim were playing with two other boys in the playground when the former pulled out a knife and stabbed Verkerke several times.
Neighbors saw a bleeding Verkerke run screaming to his home and collapsing on his porch. His distraught mother shouted for an ambulance.
The suspect asked a neighbor for a phone and he called 911 telling the operator he is turning himself in.
The owner of the phone, Glenn Stacey, heard what the boy told the 911 operator.
“‘I just stabbed someone. Come and get me. I want to die,” the boy said, according to the Detroit Free Press.
When police arrived at the scene and went to aid the stabbing victim, the suspect shouted, “Hello. I’m right here. You’re going the wrong way.”
The suspect was taken to the Kent County Juvenile Detention Center.
The motive of the stabbing is still being investigated, according to Kentwood Police Chief Thomas Hillen.
