Stanford, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Serena Williams bagged the Bank of the West Classic title after beating Angelique Kerber, 7-6 (7-1), 6-3, in Sunday’s final.
Williams racked up five straight games after falling behind 5-1 in the opening set and broke Kerber in the first game of the second set en route to her third title in the event and 61st of her career.
The tournament was Williams’ first since she retired in a doubles match with sister Venus at Wimbledon because of a viral illness.
Kerber dropped to 0-4 in title matches this season.
In Washington, DC, sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova notched her first WTA title in four years after beating Kurumi Nara, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, in the final of the Citi Open.
Kuznetsova broke Nara in the final game to clinch the victory in two hours and 16 minutes for her first tour win since 2010.
On the men’s side, second seed Milos Raonic bagged his sixth career ATP Tour title with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over fellow Canadian Vasek Pospisil.
The 23-year-old Raonic broke Pospisil four times en route to victory in 67 minutes.
