Madison Bumgarner tosses shutout as Giants crush Mets

New York, NY, United States (4E Sports) – Madison Bumgarner tossed his first shutout of the season while Hunter Pence homered twice as the San Francisco Giants crushed the New York Mets, 9-0, Sunday in the third game of a four-game series at Citi Field.

Bumgarner (13-8) allowed just two hits with a walk and 10 strikeouts, completing his second career shutout in just 94 pitches – 75 for strikes – as the Giants improved to 60-51.

Veteran Bartolo Colon (10-9) absorbed the loss after yielding six runs on eight hits with no walk and five strikeouts as the Mets slipped to 53-58.

The loss ended Colon’s Major League-high eight consecutive home games with at least seven innings of work.

Pence snapped a 4-for-38 skid with a two-run homer that opened the scoring in the third inning.

Brandon Belt, playing his second game since returning from the disabled list following a concussion, walloped a homer one inning for a 3-0 lead.

The Giants added three runs in the fifth inning behind Bumgarner’s single, RBI doubles by Pence and Posey and Pablo Sandoval’s run-scoring single that ended Colon’s night.

Posey contributed a two-run homer in the seventh before Pence added his second homer in the ninth to complete the Giants’ scoring.
