Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Kristi Toliver’s 3-pointer with 9.6 seconds left following a Nneka Ogwumike steal salvaged a win for the Los Angeles Sparks against the Connecticut Sun, 70-69 Sunday at Staples Center.
Ogwumike had 17 points and 10 rebounds while Alana Beard top scored for the Sparks (13-15) with 18 points.
The Sun raced to a 12-4 lead with 4:33 left in the first.
Then the Sparks answered with a 14-1 run capped by Candice Wiggins 3-pointer for an 18-13 lead at 7:31 of the second.
The Sun ended the half with a 7-2 run following a 3-pointer by Katie Douglas to take back the lead at the half, 28-27.
The were seven lead exchanges to start the third .
Then Nneka Ogwumike and Sandrine Gruda scored four apiece in an 8-0 burst to give the Sparks a more comfortable 41-36 lead with 3:36 remaining in the quarter.
Chiney Ogwumike’s basket and free throw to end the quarter cut the Sun’s deficit to two points at 50-48.
The Sun had an 8-2 run with Katie Douglas scoring four to get a 68-62 advantage with just 29 seconds left.
Alana Beard hit a 3-pointer to cut the Sparks deficit to 68-65, but Renee Montgomery made a free throw to make it a 69-65 Suns lead.
Behind by 69-65 with 15 seconds remaining, Candace Parker sored on a hook shot in the paint to get the Sparks to within 69-67.
Then Nneka Ogwumike stole a Sun inbounds pass and the Sparks got the ball to Toliver for the winning 3-pointer.
Chiney Ogwumike led the Sun (11-18) with 23 points and 13 rebounds.
