Carson, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Forward Robbie Keane scored twice in the second half to lead the Los Angeles Galaxy to a 3-1 triumph over the Portland Timbers Saturday at StubHub Center.
Keane scored in the 73rd and 85 minutes and assisted on Gyasi Zardes’ first-half stoppage-time goal as the Galaxy notched their fourth win in five games to take second place in the Western Conference with a 9-4-6 mark (33 points).
Diego Valeri scored for the Timbers, who have to win against the Galaxy on the road. They remained in seventh place in the West with a 6-7-9 record and 27 points.
Landon Donovan had an early scoring chance five minutes into the game but it was the Timbers who put the first point on the board as Valeri hit a 25-yarder past goalkeeper Jaime Penedo in the 14th minute
The Galaxy tied the game in the third minute of first-half stoppage time when Robbie Rogers and Keane combined to place a perfect pass to Zardes, who easily nodded it home.
Keane put the Galaxy in front in the 73rd minute as he drifted to the far post unmarked and nodded home a cross from Donovan.
With five minutes to play, Juninho was hauled down in the penalty area, resulting in a penalty kick. Keane delivered it into the bottom right corner of the net to secure all three points for the home side.
