David Goffin ousts Kenny de Schepper in Austria

Kitzbühel, Austria (4E Sports) – David Goffin lost just four of his first service points en route to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kenny de Schepper Tuesday in the opening round of the bet-at-home Cup Kitzbühel.

Goffin will next face 2012 runner-up Philipp Kohlschreiber, who will begin his bid for a sixth ATP World Tour title.

World No. 83 Paolo Lorenzi knocked out sixth seed and two-time former champion Robin Haase, 6-2, 6-3, in 71 minutes.

Lorenzi next tackles Pablo Andujar, who ended the hopes of Austrian Jurgen Melzer, 6-3, 6-4. Andujar rose to No. 44 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on Monday after he lifted his third ATP World Tour title at the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad.

Seventh seed Jarkko Nieminen defeated Teymuraz Gabashvili 6-4, 6-4 in 82 minutes to advance against Juan Monaco, who beat Andrey Golubev, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2.

In the final singles match of the day, Diego Schwartzman ousted wild card Alexander Zverev, 6-1, 6-0. He now faces defending champion and second seed Marcel Granollers.

Meanwhile, Sam Querrey fired 17 aces en route to a 6-4, 6-3 win over fellow American Michael Russell in the first round of the Citi Open.

Querrey will next play No. 4 seed Kei Nishikori of Japan. The American has won their past three meetings, most recently in 2012 at the Shanghai Rolex Masters.

Steve Johnson arranged a second-round clash with fellow American and No. 5 seed John Isner after defeating Australian wild card James Duckworth, 6-3, 7-6(4).

Dudi Sela needed two hours to get by Australian lucky loser Sam Groth in his opening match Tuesday, prevailing, 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-4.

On the women’s side of the event, Kristina Mladenovic ousted top seed Lucie Safarova, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Ekaterina Marakova downed Magdalena Rybarikova, 6-1, 6-1.

In other matches, Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova defeated Virginie Razzano, 6-2, 6-2, while

Marina Erakovic overcame Kristyna Pliskova, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In California, eighth seed Andrea Petkovic cruised past Ajla Tomljanovic, 6-1, 6-4, in the opening round of the Bank of the West Classic.

Petkovic will next face Japanese Naomi Osaka, a 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 7-5 winner over Australian Samantha Stosur.

Other winners were Sachia Vickery, Coco Vandeweghe and Karolina Pliskova.
