Japan retail sales down 0.6 percent in June; missed estimates

Tokyo, Japan (4E) – Retail sales in Japan declined 0.6 percent to 11.351tn yen in June from the previous year, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry report released on Tuesday.

The figure was short of analysts’ forecasts for a 0.5 percent drop after a 0.4 percent decline in May.

Sales from big retailers slid 1.8 percent to 1.632tn yen from a year ago, which missed analysts’ estimates of 1.7 percent drop after dropping 1.2 percent in the previous month.

Retail sales fell 0.4 percent in seasonally adjusted monthly terms, falling short of forecasts for a 0.8 percent drop after slipping 4.6 percent in May.
