London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Arsenal has added depth with the signing of versatile Calum Chambers from Southampton.
“He can play at center-back, right-back and central midfield,” manager Arsene Wenger said of 19-year-old Chambers. “I hope he will give us competition for the players in these three positions”.
Chambers became the club’s fourth summer signing after the arrivals of Alexis Sanchez, Mathieu Debuchy and David Ospina.
Chambers made 22 Premier League appearances for Southampton last term and is the third player to make the move from St Mary’s to the Emirates, following Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
“He hasn’t played many games, no, but the English players on the market in England are very expensive and at the end of the day I was ready to take a gamble because he is a player for the future,” said Wenger.
“I am so happy to be signing for Arsenal. They are a team I have much admired for their playing style, and a team who have been one of the top sides in Europe for many years,” Chambers told Arsenal’s official website.
“I’m looking forward to joining up with my new teammates today and beginning preparation for the season ahead,” added Chambers, who is expected to make his first appearance for the club in the Emirates Cup across the weekend of Aug. 2 and 3.
