San Jose, CA, United States (4E Sports) – Robbie Lawler took home a unanimous decision win over Matt Brown to set a rematch with defending UFC welterweight champion, Johny Hendricks.
In the first round, Brown hit Lawler with a shot that wobbled his knees. But Lawler threw a left hand that forced Brown to slow down and retreat.
Brown looked more agressive in the second frame landing a takedown while throwing in combinations.
Lawler displayed his dominance on the mat after landing his only takedown in the thrid round.
A low kick by Lawler was later ruled a low blow by referee John McCarthy, giving Brown a time to recover.
In the closing rounds, Brown had a sense of urgency to finish the bout.
He tried to move in and out while hitting Lawler with punches, kicks, and elbows. In the 5th round, Lawler ignited the crowd after knocking down Brown with an illegal kick.
According to the UFC, Brown landed more strikes but Lawler threw more significant ones earning him a unanimous decision victory (49-46, 49-46, 48-47).
Earlier this year, Lawler failed to win the title against Hendricks but bounced back in a TKO win over Jake Ellenberger.
In the co-main event, Anthony Johnson crushed Brazilian Antonio Rogerio Nogueira with uppercuts, just 44 seconds in the opening round.
Veteran Clay Guida suffered a rear-naked choke defeat in the second round against Jose Bermudez in the featherweight division.
While Bobby Green continues to win in the lightweight division after defeating Josh Thomson via split decision.
