Baku, Azerbaijan (4E Sports) – Stefanie Voegele stunned top seed Sorana Cirstea, 6-1, 6-1, to join defending champion Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal round of the Baku Cup tennis tournament Thursday.
Svitolina, who her first WTA title at this event last year by beating Israeli Shahar Peer in the final, defeated Silvia Soler-Espinosa, 7-5, 6-2.
In the quarterfinals, Voegele will face Peer while Svitolina will tackle Frenchwoman Pauline Parmentier.
In other second-round matches, Kristina Mladenovic defeated Donna Vekic, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0, while Francesca Schiavone ousted Julia Glushko. 6-2, 7-6 (7-2).
On the men’s side, top seed Mikhail Youzhny opened his title defense at the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad with a 6-3, 6-4 second-round victory over Kenny de Schepper.
Youzhny won 75 percent of his service points to beat de Schepper in 70 minutes and advance against Robin Haase, who edged Swiss wild card Henri Laaksonen, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5, in two hours and 18 minutes.
Wild card Viktor Troicki also reached the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Andrey Golubev. The Serb saved six of the seven break points he faced to prevail in 67 minutes in the pair’s first meeting.
Meanwhile, seventeen-year-old Borna Coric reached his first ATP World Tour quarterfinal at the Vegeta Crotia Open Umag.
Coric saved all three break points faced in his 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Argentine qualifier Horacio Zeballos. He will next face top seed Fabio Fognini, who beat Albert Montanes, 7-6(2), 6-0, in 69 minutes.
In other matches, Teymuraz Gabashvili defeated fourth seed Joao Sousa, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2, while Pablo Cuevas ousted sixth seed Andreas Seppi, 6-3, 6-1.
Gabashvili and Cuevas will face off for a place in the semi-finals at this ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament.
