Gstaad, Switzerland (4E Sports) – Juan Monaco barged into his third ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season as he stunned third seed Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, in the second round of the Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad.
Monaco converted five of his 11 break points to finish the match in just over two hours and advance against two-time former champion Thomaz Bellucci, who ousted fifth seed Federico Delbonis, 6-4, 6-4, in 84 minutes.
The 26-year-old Bellucci won his first ATP World Tour title five years ago as a qualifier in Gstaad and lifted the trophy again in 2012.
In a first-round match carried over from Tuesday, Swiss wild card Henri Laaksonen edged Gianni Mina 7-6(5), 7-6(3) to claim his first tour-level win of the season. The 22 year old goes on to face seventh seed Robin Haase.
In Croatia, third seed Marin Cilic began his Vegeta Croatia Open Umag bid with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Igor Sijsling Wednesday.
Cilic hit 11 aces and won 82 percent of his service points to advance in 68 minutes. He will next face fifth seed Lukas Rosol, who beat Pere Riba, 7-6(4), 6-1, in 74 minutes.
Pablo Carreno Busta moved on via walkover when eighth-seeded Argentine Carlos Berlocq pulled out of the draw on Day 3.
On the women’s side, fifth seed Bojana Jovanovski booked a spot in the quarterfinal of the Baku Cup after eliminating Katarzyna Piter, 6-3, 6-1.
Jovanovski’s quarterfinal opponent will be Japanese qualifier Misa Eguch, who defeated Urszula Radwanska, 6-2, 6-1.
In other matches, Pauline Parmentier dismissed eighth seed Jana Cepelova, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, while Shahar Peer downed Vesna Dolonc, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
