Ex-junior No. 1 clinches first ATP win in Croatia

Umag, Croatia (4E Sports) – Former junior world No. 1 and wild card Borna Coric recorded his first ATP World Tour match win after beating seventh seed Edouard Roger-Vasselin, 6-2, 6-4, in the opening round of the Vegeta Croatia Open Umag.

The 17-year-old Coric saved all five break points he faced and hit eight aces to beat Roger-Vasselin in one hour and 38 minutes.

Pablo Cuevas, Horacio Zeballos, Marco Cecchinato and Andrej Martin all clinched their spots in the main draw after coming through qualifying. Fabio Fognini, Tommy Robredo and Marin Cilic are all competing at the tournament this week.

Meanwhile, fifth seed Federico Delbonis opened his Crédit Agricole Suisse Open Gstaad campaign with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dustin Brown Monday.

The Argentine converted four of his five break points to clinch victory in 54 minutes at the ATP World Tour 250 clay-court tournament.

Delbonis was joined in the second round by fellow Argentine Juan Monaco, who beat Victor Hanescu 6-4, 7-5.

Playing his first match in 12 months, Viktor Troicki upset eighth seed Dominic Thiem 7-6(4), 6-4 in one hour and 35 minutes to advance against Andrey Golubev, who edged qualifier Inigo Cervantes 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) in just over two hours.

In Georgia, Sam Querrey defeated Steve Johnson, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, in 1 hour and 32 minutes in the first round of the Atlanta Open.

On the women’s side, fifth and 2012 champion Bojana Jovanovski beat Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3, in the first round of the Baku Cup event.

Shahar Peer eliminated sixth seed Yvonne Meusburger, 6-2, 6-4, while Urszula Radwanska was leading Alison Van Uytvanck 6-1 when the Belgian latter retired due to injury.

Other winners were Katarzyna Piter, Stefanie Voegele and Pauline Parmentier.
